From Wai Kru to equipment inspection: understanding muaythai’s traditions and competition requirements.
HISTORY AND RULES.
Muaythai has a distinctive identity before the first strike is exchanged. Wai Kru, the mongkhon and the music connect competition to Thai tradition. Founded in 1993, IFMA brings the sport together internationally.
Equipment follows the competition division
IFMA’s coach and manager guide specifies approved red or blue 10 oz gloves, headguards, shin guards and elbow guards. Body protectors are required for U23 and youth, while senior requirements differ. That distinction matters when clubs assemble equipment for several age groups.
Approved and recommended are different labels
Budoland product pages use both descriptions. The Nong Han glove, for example, is listed as IFMA recommended. That is different from IFMA approved. Assess each item separately, even when gloves, shorts and protection come from the same range.
A training photograph is inspiration
The photograph shows TOP TEN’s Unique range in a training setting. A training outfit does not document which models or variants can be used at a particular IFMA competition. Competition equipment needs to match documented requirements.
For a club, it helps to record the division, model, colour and size before contacting a dealer. Also ask the organiser what equipment is supplied at the event and what athletes must bring. This makes the order easier to check.
